CEO & FOUNDER

Maryam Egal

Maryam Ali Egal was born in Somalia, Africa in the state of Puntland. As the fifth child of six children, she was forced to be resourceful and clever despite her demanding environment. She moved at 18 to Canada in 1986 with her husband and had her first child there.

She is now blessed with five children, three girls and two boys. She raised her children as a single mother for the majority of their lives as she tried to build a beautiful life for her and her children. As she was raising her children alone in a new country, she relied on her community to help her learn English and expand her horizons further.

Looking for a new start, she moved her entire family in 2000 to Vancouver, BC. Maryam has great passion for helping people and strives to be a valuable member of her community and beyond. She wanted to be able to contribute back the aid she received so she started volunteering in her local area.

Maryam has volunteered with community projects such as local food banks and is currently the Vice President of the Somali Women Empowerment Society of Richmond. She is a Trustee in the public charity Elba Hope Foundation in the United Kingdom, whose work centers on community empowerment, education and sustainable development. She is also the President & Founder of the charitable organization, Hooyo Maryam Foundation, which helps their citizens to learn valuable farming skills.
